Pain Management and Power-Plate -
Connie LaPrise

When I joined Gold Canyon Health and Fitness, I was asked what goal I hoped to achieve by becoming a member.  What I wanted more than weight loss or toned muscles (however I wouldn't mind the latter as a bonus) was to live life without pain.  A few years back I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments.  Exercise is a critical element to pain management, however the challenge is that many exercises cause pain due to the impact on your muscles.  I was introduced, by the staff at GCH&F, to a machine called Power-Plate that tones and works your muscles with low impact or exertion.

The first time on the Power-Plate my pain level was reduced immediately.  After a 20-minute session I left feeling as though I had just come from an hour-long massage!  I remember that evening continually telling my husband how great I felt.

The following day, I was about to take my pain medication out of habit, when I stopped myself and realized I did not need it.  A month prior, my doctor wanted me to take a couple of weeks off from my pain medication to give my body a break.  I assumed the only way I was going to accomplish this was to go two weeks in pain.   Due to Power-Plate, I was able to go one month without any pain medication.

In addition to using Power-Plate as a tool to manage pain, it also tones muscles and increases flexibility.  When on the Power-Plate you are constantly supervised and working one-on-one with a trained member of the staff.  My trainer has been slowly increasing the intensity of my exercises and I am beginning to notice a change in my muscle tone.

I am not completely pain free and probably never will be, but I am learning how to live with fibomyalgia so it does not rule my life.  In addition to Power-Plate, I try to eat nutritious food (not always easy), keep my life simple and God centered.  Power-Plate has definitely made a positive impact on how I control my pain.

Doctor's Amazed Mr. Fox is a Survivor -
Charlie Fox

I've been a member of Gold Canyon Health and Fitness for almost 2 years.  Before that I had belonged to at least 8 different gyms all over the country in a 30-year period.  Most of the training and information I received was from other members who had been lifting and working out longer than me.  I too one complete instruction from a trainer at one of the other gyms about 3 years ago, I learned nothing that I didn't already know.  In April of 2005, I began adding the cost of gas to go to my old gym 3 days a week.  That was even when gas was about a dollar cheaper than it is now!  I found out what it cost to join GCH&F and realized that my wife, Susan and I cold both join GCH&F 6 days a week (total expenses) for less than the gas was costing me to go 3 days a week at the old place.  That was the only reason I changed at the time.  Then I went through the initial assessment and Body Map with a trainer and learned more than I had in 30 years at all of the other gyms combined.  This is not just a gym!  It really is a health and fitness center.

Late in 1996, I had some serious health challenges and was out of the gym for about 5 years.  My strength and balance were gone.  After getting to GCH&F and working on core strength and flexibility exercises, I was amazed!  On July 4, 2006, I had open-heart surgery.  Of the 3 main arteries in the heart, 2 were 100% blocked and 1 was 99% blocked.  The day before the surgery, I had done about an hour and a half of fairly intense work out.  The cardiologist could not understand how I could not have died, but at the same time, he assured me that if I had not been working out like I do at GCH&F, I would have died some years ago.  GCH&F is so different from most gyms that it isn't even in the same category!  This place, and the people who work here, are about the best thing that ever happened to me as far as health goes.  I cannot say enough good things about it, or recommend it more sincerely.

I was excited when I read that Gold Canyon Health & Fitness was adding the Gold Canyon Pilates Center to their repertoire of services!  I had done Pilates in California and enjoyed it very much.

I had just gone through two years of surgeries on my foot and both knees and wanted to get back in shape so I could go in the field with Superstition Search and Rescue.  In order to be apart of SSAE, I first had to pass the qualifying hike with a 35 lb pack on my back so I started working with Pam Paley, Director of the Pilates Center, and after only 6 sessions I was able to do my hike and not only did I finish - but I qualified!  I continue to see improvements in my body, posture, as well as in my over all confidence.

Pam is not only very knowledgeable; she works hard to get the best results from me on an individual basis.  I am forever hooked.
